Health & Safety
We ask that all children attending our cookery classes listen carefully to health and safety instructions that they are given during the class. Here are some health and safety guidelines that we talk about at the start of a cookery class so you can see what we cover with the children. It would be helpful if you could talk them through with your child before coming to their first class. Thank you!
(i) Instructions we go through with the children in the class
- Children are not allowed to run around the kitchen. We ask that the children walk carefully as this is the safest way to behave to prevent accidents.
- We will ask your child to avoid touching their face or hair while preparing food.
- We will provide your child with an apron and they will need to wear this at all times while preparing food.
- We will ask your child to wash their hands before starting food preparation and after handling raw foods, blowing their nose, touching the bin or using the toilet.
- We will ask your child to not cough or sneeze over food.
- Your child needs to be careful as they will be working in a kitchen with knives, graters and ovens which are hot. They need to follow all our instructions carefully.
- Your child will not be allowed to use the hobs, ovens, steel blade knives or any piece of equipment with a rotating blade e.g. blenders.
- Any child not following instructions may be asked to sit out of the class (for their own safety and the safety of the other children) and we may phone their parent/guardian to come and collect them.
- If your child injures themselves they should let us know immediately and we will attend to your child. We have a first aid box and we will complete an accident form in our accident book.
- In the event of a fire alarm sounding your child will need to follow the instructor’s instructions.
(ii) Other notes for parents/guardians
- If your child has long hair – please tie this back.
- Please don’t send your child wearing jewellery or nail polish.
- Please send your child wearing sensible clothing – i.e. not their best outfit. We are not liable for any damage that occurs to clothing.
- Please cover any cuts or sores with a waterproof dressing.
- All property your child brings to a class is brought entirely at your own risk and we cannot be responsible for any loss or damage. Your child must not bring any items of special value to our classes.
- If your child is suffering from a stomach upset or skin infection they should not participate – please let us know.
- Our fire assembly point is on the opposite side of Stanton Road.
